Top 3 Best Used Chevy SUVs
Wednesday, October 28th, 2009Looking to buy a used Chevy SUV? The volume leader from General Motors has some very attractive choices that can reasonably accommodate every buying requirement. Here are the Top 3 Best Used Chevy SUVs to consider.
- Chevrolet Traverse (2009) – It’s an all-new model for 2009, and if you can get a used Chevrolet Traverse at a decent
price, it’s a great deal. Consumer Guide hails the midsize Traverse – the first 8-passenger crossover Chevrolet as one of its Best Buy picks for 2009. Traverse shares its architecture with Buick Enclave, GMC Acadia and Saturn Outlook, but differs in features, details and pricing. Because it comes from GM’s volume division, it’s less costly than its siblings. That’s not to say it isn’t a bargain. Pros include passenger and cargo room with three rows of seating, ride and handling, front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive and lots of available options, including top-of-the-line LTZ model. Cons include some tire noise on coarse road surfaces. Edmunds calls Traverse “a strong entry in the already crowded full-size crossover SUV segment,” and says it’s “easy to drive for such a large vehicle,” with “above-average tow rating” of 5200 pounds. Edmunds True Market Value (TMV) pricing for the 2009 model ranges from $26,995-$38,415.
- Chevrolet Suburban (2005-2009) – Bigger and more spacious than the Tahoe, the Chevrolet Suburban is one of Consumer Guide’s Best Buys in the full-size SUV segment for 2005-2009. With passenger seating for up to nine, truck-type chassis, ample towing capability and plenty of cargo space, expect to pay more for fuel – Suburban (like full-size trucks) isn’t known as a gas miser. In 2009, Suburban added a new 6-speed automatic transmission plus numerous safety and luxury features. Edmunds recommends Suburban (which has been sold since 1936) as “the go-to choice for families.” TMV prices range from $14,519 (2005) to $46,649 (2009).
- Chevrolet Equinox (2005-2009) – Edmunds calls the Chevrolet Equinox “high on our list of recommended crossover SUVs” due to its “spacious cabin, powerful and efficient performance, variety of trim levels and just-right-for-most-folks size.” With expandable space for second-row passengers, decent fuel economy, and seating for five, Equinox, especially the first generation (2005-2009) offers a lot of value for the money. Standard anti-lock brakes were added in 2006, stability control in 2007, a Sport and LTZ model in 2009, along with standard side curtain airbags and satellite radio with optional Bluetooth. Edmunds TMV for first-generation Equinox models ranges from $10,555 (2005) to $26,324 (2009). Buyers should note that the second-generation 2010 Equinox garners even higher praise from Edmunds who says “Equinox is one of the best compact crossover SUVs on the market.”
Also consider Chevrolet Tahoe if you want a full-size Chevy SUV but not as big as the Suburban. Tahoe is tops on many lists (Consumer Guide, Edmunds, U.S. News & World Report and more), but since we previously listed Tahoe as a top best used SUV, we thought we’d give equal time to Suburban here.
