Best SUVs for Tall People

Drivers who are 6-feet or taller need more room for head and legs, so the question becomes: which are the best SUVs for tall people? Other dimensions should be taken into consideration besides head room and legroom, and include hip room and shoulder room. But, when you’re a tall driver, it doesn’t do you any good to be comfortably ensconced in your seat if your head touches the car’s headliner or your legs bunch up like bent matchsticks.

Here, then, are the best SUVs for tall people for 2010 models.

  • 2010 Honda ElementThis compact, car-based SUV boasts a cube-like shape that’s ideal for tall people. In fact, it tops the list in terms of the amount of head room it offers: 43.3 inches. Legroom is also fairly substantial for a compact vehicle at 41 inches. The driver’s seat is height adjustable, another plus for those of taller stature. Hip room is 55 inches, while shoulder room is 57.1 inches. Edmunds calls Element “a good choice for people in need of a compact crossover with a versatile interior design.” Downsides include the fact that it only seats four and has rather unimpressive fuel economy. Consumer Guide gives Element good marks as “roomy and adaptable…with Honda’s expected solid workmanship.”
  • 2010 Mercedes Benz GL-ClassEdmunds hails the luxury crossover SUV Mercedes Benz GL as “classy and refined,” saying it “rises above the competition with its confident road manners and excellent build quality.” The second row doesn’t adjust fore and aft, however, and options can jack up the price. But in terms of head room for tall drivers, it’s number two with 42.2 inches. In legroom dimensions, GL beats out Element with 52.5 inches. Hip- and shoulder room are 51.5 inches and 53.7 inches, respectively. U.S. News and World Report lists Mercedes Benz GL Class as #2 in large luxury SUVs.
  • 2010 Jeep CommanderComing in at number three on the list of best SUVs for tall people is the Jeep Commander. In terms of head room, Commander is just under Mercedes-Benz GL-Class with 42.1 inches. Legroom is more in the Honda Element range, coming in at 41.7 inches. Hip- and shoulder room are 55.6 inches and 59 inches, respectively. U.S. News and World Report ranks Jeep Commander at #10 on the list of affordable large SUVs. Its appeal is one of the lowest prices of full-size SUVs, but many reviewers complain that the interior is somewhat “inhospitable.” A midsize SUV, Commander is Jeep’s most spacious vehicle ever, seating 7 passengers. Edmunds says Commander’s “powerful V8 and off-road capabilities among its strengths,” but says it’s “not enough to overcome poor fuel economy or limited cargo and passenger space.”

Other models to consider for best SUVs for tall people include the 2010 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV (41.1 inches head room, 41.3 inches legroom), Infiniti FX50 and FX35 (39.3 inches head room and 44.7 inches legroom), and Subaru Outback (40.8 inches head room, 43 inches legroom).

At 6’2″, it’s not just the leg room but also the height of the seat. I would like a car in which my hips are the same height off the floor as my knees, atleast 18″, like a dinning room chair. Any suggestions?

Excellent question. We recommend you look for vehicles with multi-adjustable power driver’s seat. Some suggestions include:
    • 2011 Ford Flex full-size CUV which has 41.8 inches front head room and 40.8 inches front leg room and dual front reclining bucket seats with standard 6-way power driver adjustable seat height. As a bonus, Flex seats seven passengers.
    • 2011 Honda Pilot – The 8-passenger 2011 Honda Pilot has dual front reclining bucket seats with standard 8-way power adjustable seat for the driver. An optional 10-way power driver seat may make seat height adjusting a bit more accommodating. Front leg room is 41.4 inches.
    • 2011 Scion xB – The front-drive 2011 Scion xB wagon seats five and features front sport bucket seats with driver seat height adjustment and armrest. Front head room is 40.0 inches and front leg room is 40.7 inches.
    • 2011 Nissan Altima – The midsize 2011 Nissan Altima sedan features wide, comfortable seats, 52.5 inches of front leg room, and standard 6-way manual adjustable driver’s seat (in 2.5, 2.5S and Hybrid) and 8-way power adjustable driver’s seat in 3.5SR.
    • 2011 Hyundai Sonata – All-new for 2011, the Hyundai Sonata midsize sedan has 8-way power adjustable driver’s seat standard on SE and Limited and optional on GLS. Leather seats, which are more comfortable, say reviewers, are standard only on Limited. Sonata has 45.5 inches of front leg room.
    • 2011 Kia Optima – Based on the same mechanicals (vehicle platform and powertrain) as corporate sibling Hyundai Sonata, the 2011 Kia Optima is all-new as well this model year. Standard on all models except LX (where it is optional) is an 8-way power adjustable driver’s seat with lumbar support. Leather seat trim is standard in EX and EX V6. Front leg room is 43.7 inches in all Optima trims.
    • 2011 Mercedes-Benz C-Class – In the luxury midsize sedan category, the 2011 Mercedes-Benz C-Class features standard 8-way power front seats (driver and front passenger) that power-adjust for reach, height, tilt and recline. There’s also an optional 4-way power lumbar support for the driver. C-Class has 41.7 inches of front leg room.
Are there more 2011 models with driver adjustable seat height? There are several, including 2011 Hyundai Veracruz midsize SUV, Nissan Armada full-size SUV, Chrysler 300 affordable large sedan, the Volvo S60 luxury midsize sedan, and more. As always, we recommend that you take some seat time (literally) in each of the vehicles you research. That way you’ll know for certain whether it’s the right “fit” for you.
