Used car sales are booming, and while popular models like the Ford F-150 and Honda Accord dominate the market, some unexpected vehicles by Hyundai and even Subaru are the most popular used cars in certain states. These outliers, along with their dominance via single-digit market share, are the result of a new iSeeCars.com study, which analyzed over six million used cars for sale, state-by-state, and ranked them by number of sales.

As seen in the infographic and table below, the Ford F-150 dominated the used car sales in nearly every state – it is the number one used vehicle sold in 36 states. This isn’t a surprise because the F-150 is the highest-selling vehicle in the new car segment as well, with the F-Series selling more trucks than all other truck brands combined. It is the best-selling vehicle in the United States.

In nearly every state the F-150 is the highest-selling used car, it holds over 3 percent of the total used vehicle sales. Yet the F-150 is not the only top-selling pickup truck. Alaska has the Chevrolet Silverado as its top-selling used vehicle, with a massive 6.8 percent of the state’s total used sales.

Pickup trucks are not the only best-sellers in the aftermarket. A few states not known for agriculture or a “cowboy” image have passenger cars as their top sellers. The Honda Accord and Civic are the most popular used vehicles in California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, and Virginia.

What may not surprise anyone is that New Jersey is the lone holdout for European car sales, with the BMW 3-Series as the best-selling used car in that state. Vermont is the most Subaru-loving state, with the Outback as its top used car.

Hyundai isn’t being left out either. The Korean carmaker holds the top position in used car sales in both Rhode Island and Utah with the Elantra and Sonata, respectively. Finally, the Nissan Altima is the most popular used car in Nevada, and the Toyota Corolla is the most popular in Florida.

The states whose top-selling cars are not the Ford F-150 are also some of the most diverse in terms of vehicle types in the used market. For example, the states where Hondas dominate only require a 2-3 percent share to hold the lead. The same is true for other makes—the vehicles that dominate a state’s used car sales only do so by a small percentage. The Nissan Altima, for example, but only makes up about 2.4 percent of Nevada’s total used car market. The Honda Civic holds only 2.1 percent of sales in New Hampshire. Indeed, the average for all top sellers in each state is only about 3 percent of the total secondary market.

So where does your state stand? What’s the most popular used car where you live? Do you happen to own one?
