Perhaps the most stunning thing about the debut of the newly redesigned and refreshed 2015 Mini hardtop was the somewhat “caveman-like” protruding front end that makes the still quite cute coupe look like it has a swollen mouth. Perhaps it got its tongue pierced during a wild night out? As if BMW would tell us.
What BMW did inform us of was the changes made to powertrains with base Cooper models getting a 1.5 liter 3-cylinder good for 134 horsepower/162 lb. feet of torque and no doubt healthy fuel economy returns. The Cooper S gets a 2.0 liter turbocharged 4-cylinder good for 189 horsepower and 207 lb-ft of torque. Both engines come mated to either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission with a new dynamic damper handling control system newly available on Minis for2015.
The interior of the newly “New Mini” has truly been improved over the last model which had some controls for audio, climate and other functions that looked like afterthoughts designed at the Fisher-Price School of Quality. There is still the unique Mini feel to it all but now most any human could get into a 2015 Mini and figure out how to turn on the stereo. Kudos to the improvements, then.
Otherwise, Mini has yet to roll the same changes across its whole lineup to the Paceman, Countryman, Coupe, Convertible or roadster so if you want to avoid a Mini with a pierced tongue you had better act soon. Otherwise, bring on the newly new Mini!
