Three rows of seating is pretty standard fare for families looking for a little more room than a sedan, don’t want a minivan or wagon. Used midsize SUVs offer good value, plenty of conveniences, and standard and optional features. Some, however, offer more passenger and cargo room than others, and prices vary widely depending on model, trim, options, conditions, mileage and location.

Here we take a look at seven of the midsize SUVs with third-row seating that are some of the best.

2012-2013 Chevrolet TraverseWhen it comes to a family-friendly SUV that’s got all the creature comforts available, looks great, gets good gas mileage, is easy on the wallet and has three rows of seating for eight, an obvious choice is the 2012-2013 Chevrolet Traverse midsize crossover SUV. Standard features include backup camera, Bluetooth connectivity and 6.5-inch touchscreen display. Fuel economy with the 3.6-liter V6 engine and six-speed automatic transmission is 17 mpg city/24 mpg highway. Safety ratings are top-notch as well. Pricing ranges from about $22,500 to $35,530.

2011-2013 Dodge DurangoWith standard seating for seven in three rows, the Dodge Durango, last redesigned in 2011, offers quiet and composed handling, spacious front seat, upscale materials in the cabin, attractive design, excellent safety scores and powerful Pentastar V6 and optional Hemi V8 engines. Third row is roomy enough for kids, but not taller adults. Depending on model, trim, options, condition and mileage, pricing ranges from around $20,990 to $36,991 (and higher).

2013 Hyundai Santa FeThis midsize crossover SUV seats up to seven in three rows, has a V6 engine delivering plenty of power, an upscale cabin with comfortable seats, and spacious seating even in the third row. Cargo space, however, is a bit less than competing three-row crossovers. The 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe, redesigned for 2013, is the larger version. There is a smaller, two-row Santa Fe Sport also available. Safety scores are excellent for the Santa Fe, appealing to families of all sizes. As for pricing, look for the 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe to range from $27,400 to $36,500.

2013 Ford FlexSlightly refreshed for the 2013 model year, the 2013 Ford Flex seats up to seven passengers and is standard with front-wheel drive and a 3.5-liter V6 engine. All-wheel drive and a turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine are optional. Pluses for this midsize crossover SUV include styling, generous interior room, pleasant driving experience, versatility in passenger and cargo space and an especially roomy third row. Consider the Flex an alternative to a minivan or larger SUV but offering the flexibility and convenience of both. Pricing ranges from around $22,990 to $39,748.

2013 Mazda CX-9 Critics contend that the 2013 Mazda CX-9, refreshed for the 2013 model year, offers nimble driving for a three-row midsize crossover SUV. Seating for seven is available, but the third row is not quite as comfortable as the first two rows. Front-wheel drive is standard and all-wheel drive is optional. The Mazda CX-9 is available in Sport, Touring and Grand Touring trims. Pricing ranges from $23,000 to $34,800.

2013 Nissan PathfinderAnother midsize crossover SUV that was fully redesigned last model year, the 2013 Nissan Pathfinder has an easy-access third row, upscale interior, refined ride, composed handling and good fuel economy with the V6 engine of EPA-estimated 20 mpg city/26 mpg highway. The third row, however, is a bit cramped and cargo space is just so-so. Lots of standard features and many desirable options make this a family pleaser. Pricing ranges from around $22,900 for S trim to the vicinity of $35,000 for Platinum.

2011-2013 Toyota HighlanderLast thoroughly redesigned in 2011, the Toyota Highlander midsize SUV for the 2011-2013 model years is a great value for families looking for wide model range, strong owner-satisfaction, comfortable ride, well-made interior and many convenience features. Base and Plus trim models have a four-cylinder engine, while SE, Limited and all-wheel drive models have a standard V6 engine. There is also a Highlander Hybrid available. Pricing ranges from about $22,800 to around $40,000 for the Toyota Highlander and $37,988 to $40,900 for Toyota Highlander Hybrid.
