Now that 2011 is behind us and the full calendar year of sales numbers are in, we’ve got the run-down on the best selling SUVs in 2011. We’re including crossovers in this list of the top ten biggest sellers last year, since, technically, they are SUVs.
Here are the best selling SUVs in 2011, ranked according to total calendar year sales:
1.– The compact crossover Ford Escape was the undisputed leader of the pack of best selling SUVs in 2011, recording sales of 25,574 units in December and a full calendar year total of 254,293, up 33 percent from the same period last year. Even though an all-new 2013 model will be on sale early this year, customers looking for a safe and well-equipped crossover SUV found a lot to like in the current model, as the final sales numbers amply prove.
2.– Missing the top-selling spot by nearly 36,000 units, the compact Honda CR-V, with December sales of 21,586 and full-year sales of 218,373 still managed to soundly secure the number two spot for 2011. CR-V sales last year were up 6.8 percent over the same period in 2010.
3.– The five-passenger compact Chevrolet Equinox crossover SUV, selling 18,195 units in the month of December, closed out 2011 calendar year with sales of 193,274. That’s up 28.9 percent year-over-year.
4.– The midsize Ford Explorer, with seating for up to seven passengers, is the clear winner of the number four spot of best selling SUVs in 2011. The Explorer posted sales of 13,872 units in December and full-year sales totaling 135,704, up 24 percent over the same period in 2010.
