If you’re in the market for a green vehicle, but want to be as eco-friendly as possible, Ford’s new concept may be for you. Ford will be displaying the C-MAX Solar Energi Concept, a car that can run 21 miles strictly on sunlight, at CES in Las Vegas next week.
This concept car is unique because it runs off solar power. The C-MAX Solar Energi Concept comes with high-efficiency solar cells on the roof. There is also a Fresnel lens used to attract sunlight to fuel the car.
When fully charged, the C-MAX Solar Energi Concept matches the same range as the C-MAX Energi of up to 620 miles, which contains 21 electric-only miles, according to Ford. The concept does have a charge port, which allows the driver to charge up through the grid if they choose.
If you think 21 miles doesn’t sound like much, Ford data says the sun could supply the fuel for up to 75% of all trips made by an average driver in a solar hybrid car.
The Ford C-MAX Solar Energi Concept is a collaborative effort of Ford, SunPower and the Georgia Institute of Technology. For more details on this solar hybrid car, read Ford’s full press release.
