Since brand image is one of the biggest determinants of a car’s resale value, it’s no wonder automakers Honda, Porsche and Toyota have dominated resale value lists for years. Expert sources to check for resale values include Kelley Blue Book, Edmunds, Intellichoice and NADA, so that’s who we turned to in arriving at these three Best Cars for Resale Value.
- Mini Cooper – Intellichoice named the Mini Cooper and Cooper S to its “2009 SmartChoice Highest Retained Value Award” in convertible and mini-compact car categories. Cars.com puts Mini Cooper at the top of its 2010 “Best Overall Car Resale Values” list. Kelley Blue Book hails Mini Cooper in the 2009 “Best Resale Value Award Winners” listing (it also won 2006-2008). Edmunds says of the redesigned 2009 Mini Cooper, “We can’t think of another car on the road that comes close to the Cooper’s cocktail of style, fuel efficiency and fun,” while also commenting on “fussy controls, puny backseat, poor outward visibility in convertible, stiff and noisy ride.”
- Honda Civic – For 2009 (as in numerous prior years), and Civic Hybrid make the Kelley Blue Book “Best Resale Value Award Winners” list and Honda is named best brand. Edmunds says Civic “continues to set the bar for the small car segment,” listing pros such as “fuel-efficient and performance-oriented engines, roomy and refined interior,” and cons such as “controversial gauge cluster design and slow acceleration times” (Hybrid and DX). Edmunds also notes 2007 Civic is the winner of the Editor’s Most Wanted list for best coupe and sedan under $20,000.
- BMW 1-Series – Intellichoice named the BMW 128i to its “2009 Best Bet Retained Value” list in the luxury convertible and near-luxury car categories. Cars.com singles out BMW 1-Series in 2010 “Best Overall Car Resale Values” list, saying the car scores for handling, steering, inline 6-cylinder performance, but has “minimal back seat space, occasional clumsy shift from automatic.” Edmunds says “for the money, it’s hard to think of a car that puts together as much performance, refinement and user-friendliness in one package as the 2009 BMW 1-Series,” but notes “options can quickly drive up price, tiny seats, some interior elements not quite up to usual BMW standard.”
Other Best Cars for Resale Value includeand TSX, and Q7, BMW 5-Series and M3, and Corvette Z06, , Fit and Odyssey, Mazda Mazda3 MAZDASPEED, Mercedes-Benz CLK350, SL-Class, and SLK 55 AMG, , and and Touareg.
