Minivan sales have declined in recent years, thanks to more and more crossover SUVs going into production; but that doesn’t mean you can throw them in the grave and start shoveling dirt just yet. Chrysler reported their best June sales since 2007, and the Chrysler Town & Country ranked highest among all minivans in J.D. Power & Associates Top Quality Award. Even Chrysler Canada boasted their best June sales in minivans since 2005. Sales were up 14% from last year on the Dodge Caravan alone. With Chrysler’s recent sales slump and the economy making slower-than-expected turns toward the positive side, these numbers indicate that a large segment of consumers still have a major interest in the minivan as their vehicle of choice. Here’s a look at some of the models that made a large impact in sales numbers for June 2011.


Being one of the only manufacturers that still offers two lines of minivan, one would expect Chrysler to lead the way in sales, and they have. The Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Caravan have combined to give the struggling Detroit-based manufacturer a bit of a needed lift. Chrysler saw a 30% sales increase over June of 2010, and the minivan segment went a long way toward making that happen. Being the lesser-priced of the two models, the Dodge Caravan led the way in total sales, at 10,822 units, with the Chrysler Town & Country coming in fourth with 6,810 units sold.


The world’s leader in quality and reliability standards is quietly making a jump in minivan sales, placing second on the overall minivan sales list for June with 9,267 units sold of the Toyota Sienna. The Sienna is a 2011 pick as an IIHS Top Safety Pick Award winner, and a 2010 recipient of Kelley Blue Book’s Best Resale Value Award. With Toyota’s reputation and current market share, look for the Japanese manufacturer to stay in the top three in sales for a while.


Many automotive experts believe that Honda is finally on the down slope of a very long run of success. Receding quality and increasing prices have caused several Honda loyalists to switch over to rival brands such as fellow Japanese automaker Toyota. Still, Honda keeps clawing and scratching to maintain a valid market share with family-friendly features and top safety awards. They placed fourth for the month of June in minivan sales, as the Odyssey rolled off 7,234 units.


Placing a fairly distant fifth with 2,086 units sold, is the Kia Sedona. That’s down a fair bit from May when the South Korean manufacturer rolled 2,453 units out. What’s even more disturbing for Kia is the fact that all four makes placing ahead of them in the month of June saw increases in their numbers over the previous month. The upside is that they are staying ahead of rivals Mazda and Nissan.


The MAZDA5 is the only minivan in the Mazda lineup, and its sales remained steady in the month of June, showing no significant increase. Mazda rolled out 1,659 of the family-friendly models in June, up a small amount from 1,628 in May. It won’t give them a majority share of the minivan segment, but any increase has to be looked upon as a positive.


Volkswagen hasn’t really been known for its van styling since the old flat-nosed “bus” of the 1960s. As such, one would expect them to be near the bottom of minivan sales, and they are. 1,059 units of the Routan rolled out the door in June. That’s down a fair amount from 1,427 in May, and leaves the German manufacturer one step up from the bottom.


The sales of the Nissan Quest improved in June, up from May’s numbers of 873 units to 984 sold this month, but not enough to keep them from being in the bottom of the barrel. Not a great restart for a minivan that had to take a year off from production.
